Twenty Something
Twenty Something engages with the early years of manhood. A lot can change between twenty and thirty. The work consists of intimate portraits of men in their last years of youth, accompanied by landscapes and still lifes that represent the longing for childhood freedom and the search for a sense of home.
I approach this subject from the context of going through the same stage of life as the men involved. Becoming a man is filled with expectations, from parents and peers we feel pressure, from this, a fear of judgement arises and can cloud our sense of identity. The work is fragile, full of ache, discomfort and nostalgia. The second decade is muddy, financial issues become primary and relationships become serious. I attempt to show the complexities of this stage of life that is often glamorised.
Whilst working on this project I have found a unifying sense of maturity and growth, not letting our past determine our future and to enjoy the exploration of adulthood.
